Meaning preservation guide

How to preserve meaning when humanizing AI text

A rewrite can sound smoother and still be wrong. Meaning preservation requires more than keeping the topic. The claims, evidence, certainty, qualifications, citations, and intended conclusion all need to survive the change in language.

01

Meaning is more than the subject

Two paragraphs can discuss the same study, product, or recommendation while making different claims. One may say an intervention caused an improvement. Another may say the result was associated with improvement. The topic stayed the same, but the meaning changed.

This is why a general similarity score is not enough. A careful review has to track what is being claimed, how strongly it is stated, what supports it, and which conditions limit it.

02

Create a claim ledger before rewriting

For an important passage, list the statements a reader is expected to take away. Include the main conclusion and the smaller claims that support it. Mark whether each statement is a fact, interpretation, recommendation, prediction, or opinion.

After the rewrite, map every original claim to a sentence in the result. If a claim has no match, it was omitted. If the result contains a claim with no source in the original, it was introduced.

  • Main claim or recommendation
  • Supporting evidence and examples
  • Conditions that must be true
  • Limitations and uncertainty
  • Intended tone and audience
03

Lock exact details separately

Names, dates, numbers, percentages, currencies, measurements, citations, quotations, URLs, and technical identifiers are not stylistic material. Copy them into a protected list before rewriting and verify each one afterward.

Check units and relationships, not just the visible digits. A change from 15 percent to 15 percentage points, from per month to per year, or from version 4.1 to version 4.0 can survive a superficial comparison while changing the result completely.

04

Protect qualifications and causality

Words such as may, could, suggests, only, unless, and under these conditions often carry the most important part of a careful claim. Humanizers may remove them because the sentence appears cleaner without them.

Also inspect causal language. Associated with does not mean caused by. A pilot finding is not a settled conclusion. A recommendation is not a requirement. If the rewrite increases certainty, broadens the population, or removes an exception, restore the original boundary.

05

Keep citations attached to the right claim

Preserving the citation text is not enough if it moves beside a different sentence. Confirm that each citation still supports the claim immediately around it. Keep quotation marks, page numbers, author names, and publication dates intact.

A humanizer cannot verify that the original source is accurate or that the citation format meets every style guide. Open the source, check the quoted or paraphrased material, and use the required citation rules before publishing or submitting the draft.

06

Compare versions in two passes

First, perform a fidelity pass. Ignore elegance and compare the original with the rewrite sentence by sentence. Resolve missing claims, new information, changed details, and altered qualifications.

Second, perform a writing pass. Read the corrected version on its own and judge rhythm, clarity, voice, and fit for the audience. Separating the passes prevents an attractive sentence from distracting you from an accuracy problem.

07

Reject a rewrite when repair costs too much

Do not assume every output deserves editing. If the rewrite repeatedly changes facts, compresses the passage into a summary, invents transitions, or flattens the writer's voice, start again from the original. Repairing a weak transformation can take longer than revising the draft yourself.

A dependable humanizer should make the final review easier. Unrobot's Meaning Lock checks protected details and can stop a result that changes them, but the writer remains responsible for sources, policy compliance, and the final decision.

08

Use the final version you can defend

The right output is not necessarily the one with the largest number of changed words. It is the version that says the same thing more naturally and still sounds credible in your context.

Keep the original, the rewrite, and your final edits. That record makes source checking easier, shows how the draft developed, and gives you a clear way to explain the finished work.

Quick answers

Questions about this guide.

How do I preserve meaning when humanizing AI text?

List the original claims and protected details, rewrite with full context, compare both versions line by line, restore every qualification and citation relationship, and reject any output that introduces unsupported information.

Can a rewrite keep the same topic but change the meaning?

Yes. It can alter certainty, causality, scope, evidence, exceptions, or the conclusion while continuing to discuss the same subject.

What is meaning drift?

Meaning drift is any unintended change to a claim, fact, relationship, qualification, tone, or intention during a rewrite.

Should citations stay in the same place?

A citation should remain attached to the claim it supports. Moving it can imply that the source supports a different statement, even when the citation text itself is unchanged.

What does Meaning Lock do?

Meaning Lock checks names, numbers, dates, citations, quotations, links, and other protected details before Unrobot returns a rewrite. It supports review but does not replace source verification.
